The first step is to complete a FREE required orientation workshop. Contact MSDE Office of Child Care by calling 410-750-8771 to register for the 3-hour in-person orientation workshop. Workshops For MSDE Office of Child Care Training Requirements
After completing the required Family Child Care Orientation workshop, applicants for a Family Child Care License must satisfy a series of training requirements determined by MSDE Office of Child Care.
The following training workshops are required:
Project Security Blanket (Emergency and Disaster Preparedness) - A 6-hour workshop on emergency and disaster preparedness in child care settings which includes completion of an emergency plan. Another workshop which satisfies this requirement is titled Project Security Blanket and is also 6 hours. If this workshop is scheduled for two evenings, you must attend both nights to receive a certificate.
SIDS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Supporting Breastfeeding in Child Care - SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a healthy infant under 12 months. The cause of SIDS is unknown, but there are ways to make babies in your care safer.
Family Child Care Provider Pre-Service Training (ONLINE ONLY) - This course consists of 24 hours of professional development and fulfills the the Maryland pre-service requirement for child care providers that work in a home child care setting. Includes 6 four-hour workshops in Child Development, Curriculum, Health, Safety & Nutrition, Special Needs, Professionalism, and Community.
Howard County Child Care Resource Center - The Howard County Child Care Resource Center is not currently holding in-person 24-Hour Family Child Care Pre-Service. We are now offering the MSDE approved Family Child Care Pre-Service Series online as convenient way for you to complete this requirement. Register for Family Child Care Provider Pre-Service Training, or visit the Online Child Care Professional Education Center to register for the online training.
Including All Children and the ADA - Explore the requirements of ADA for early care programs, examine best inclusionary practices, and learn about resources which can support you and your families.
Medication Administration - Learn how to give oral, topical, inhaled and emergency medicines to infants and children; how to keep accurate records; regulations for hygiene, safety, and measurement.
Infant/Child and Adult CPR/AED Certification - American Heart Association certified workshop with AED (Automatic External Defibrillation) certification. Upon successful completion of the class, a card will be issued and is good for two years.
First Aid Certification - American Heart Association certified workshop. Upon successful completion of the class, a card will be issued and is good for two years.
Basic Health and Safety Training - This workshop provides basic information about critical health and safety topics for all child care providers to meet the requirement of the proposed licensing regulation regarding training in basic health and safety areas. Key topics include: establishing and maintaining safe and healthy environments; safe practices to prevent and reduce injuries, identification and reporting of abuse or neglect and proper sanitation practices and procedures.
