Safety Education Programs for Parents and Caregivers

Safe Kids Howard County educates parents and caregivers on the selection and installation of appropriate child passenger restraints. The group of dedicated volunteers averages 400 seats per year. In addition, a new campaign was launched in 2007-2008 on “safety in and around cars”. This program demonstrates the hazards of trunk entrapment, a child being left alone in a car and “backover” incidents. The coalition teams up with PTA’s, Rec and Parks, and community Associations to set up “Bicycle Safety Rodeos.” The rodeo consists of bicycle safety tips, proper helmet adjustment, care of the bike and rules of the road. The participants travel through stations where they are taught hand signals, looking around obstacles, riding on the right and control of their bicycles.

Other injury areas that the coalition addresses:

  • Pedestrian safety
  • Fire and burn safety
  • Poison safety
  • Fall safety
  • Playgrounds
  • Home safety and safety surveys
  • Fire arm safety
  • Water safety

The coalition provides speakers to groups and organizations on childhood injury areas.

The coalition is always looking for new and innovated ways to convey the important facts that parents, grandparents and caregivers need to provide a safe environment for the children of Howard County.
