Human Rights Contests & Awards

The Howard County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission is seeking nominations for the Commission’s 2023 “Living the Dream” Award. The award will recognize an individual or organization (community, civic or religious) who has promoted the teaching and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through community involvement. The award will be presented at the Commission’s annual Howard County Commemorative Celebration Program.

This year’s awards celebration will be presented on Sunday, January 15th, 2023.  Living The Dream Applications are Due by October 17, 2022.   Entrees can be dropped off at the Office of Human Rights & Equity by Friday, October 17, 2022, at 5:00 PM.

The deadline for all contests is October 17, 2022.  Entries must be submitted via email or hand delivered by 5:00 PM EST on October 17, 2022, to MLK@howardcountymd.gov

Essay  Contest Question

"What does peace look like to you: within yourself, your school, the community, or the world?  Select at least one."

Essay Contest Rules:

• Participants must be Howard County Middle or High School students.

• Essays must be typed, and double-spaced in Microsoft Word format.

• Middle School essays must be 500 to 750 words. High School essays must
  be 750 to 1000 words.

• Submissions must include the student's name, address, phone number,
  school, grade, and email address.

• The application must also be submitted with each submission.

• Students with disabilities may submit entries using other media and/or visual presentations.

Oratory Contest Rules:

• Participants must be Howard County Middle or High School students.

• Speeches must be written by the student.

• Speeches should be 5 to 7 minutes in length.

• Speeches must be recorded on video via phone, camcorder, or computer and
  emailed to MLK@howardcountymd.gov

• Judges must be able to view the student's performance clearly for consideration. 

• Submissions must include the student's name, address, phone number,
  school, grade, and email address.

• The application must also be submitted with each submission.

• Students with disabilities may submit entries using other media and/or visual presentations.

Poster Contest Rules:

• Create a work of art that best reflects the theme: What Does Peace Look Like to You?

• Participants must be Howard County Elementary or Middle School students.

• Students may interpret the theme in any medium, but art must be the student's
  original work.

• The poster size must be between 8.5" x 11" and 8.5" x 14" in.

• Submissions must include the student's name, address, phone number,
  school, grade, and email.

• Posters must be submitted with a description of 300 words or less.
