Howard County Government’s 2021 Employee Awards Program recognizes employees nominated by their co-workers. Courtney Barkley, a Human Services Specialist in the Department of Community Resources and Services, was named the County’s “2021 Employee of the Year” for her vital and tireless efforts ensuring that no senior resident went without a meal during the pandemic.

The suspect, Jeffrey Burnham, was taken into custody in West Virginia.

Howard County’s Department of Housing and Community Development is now accepting applications for its Moderate Income Housing Unit homeownership program's October open enrollment period. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 29th.

Howard County submitted its application for the vital Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to finance the Extended North Tunnel and other flood mitigation projects a part of the Ellicott City Safe & Sound plan.

Today, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced $1.5 million in grant funding that will support residential treatment centers in the county for those facing substance use disorders.

A Howard County construction project to extend a water main along Woodleigh Drive in Columbia, is expected to begin on or about Monday, October 18th. Temporary lane shifts can be expected during the projects construction hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by early November 2021.

Howard County has begun restoration of approximately 1,100 linear feet of a stream near 3713 Fels Lane in Ellicott City. The unnamed tributary of the Hudson Branch to the Patapsco River, has been heavily impacted by stormwater and has eroded significantly as a result. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by mid-January 2022. 

 Howard County Recreation & Parks is adding ADA-accessible pathways and parking to improve Centennial Park South in Ellicott City, beginning on or about Monday, October 18th.

Howard County Government offices, courts, animal shelter and 50+ centers will be closed in observance of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday on Monday, October 11th. However, regular Monday trash, recycling, yard trim and food scrap collection services will be in effect and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be open. 

The Howard County Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission is seeking nominations for its annual “Living the Dream” Award and student entrants for its 2021 essay, oratory and poster contests. The deadline to apply for the award and contests is 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 29th.

The Howard County Health Department is participating in the Maryland Walktober celebration by encouraging Howard County to “Walk, Roll, Ride and Move!”

Howard County’s Department of Public Works will hold an informational public meeting on Wednesday, October 13th to present plans to restore and stabilize approximately 700 linear feet of an existing stream bed owned by the County’s Department of Recreation & Parks and located behind the properties from 2713 Thornbrook Road to 2665 Thornbrook Road in Columbia.

Police are offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information.

Howard County has completed a draft of its Complete Streets Design Manual and is offering multiple community engagement opportunities for residents and businesses to provide feedback.

The 50th Anniversary of the Long Reach Village Center will be celebrated on Friday, October 15 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 16 from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Legislation releases County funding from contingency and utilizes American Rescue Plan funding to support program immediately.

Work to take place each night from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., beginning night of October 19th and ending morning of October 22nd.
